Château de Saint Martin is a beautiful estate of 100 hectares, of which 50 are vines. It is steeped in history, beginning with the Romans who cultivated the vine and whose influence can still be felt today. Saint Martin became a wine priory of the monks of Lerins who developed wine growing at Saint Martin from the Xth to the XVIIIth century. In the XVth century, they built an exceptional underground cellar and it was in this venerable sanctuary that wine was matured in tanks hollowed out of the rock, giving perfect insulation.
The Côtes de Provence appellation covers 18 000 hectares falls into different areas:
* the costal area constituted of granite schists
* the clay / sand permian depression on the northern of the range of the Maures
* the chalk dominated triassic plateau
Château de Saint Martin, at an altitude of 130 meters is situated at the junction of two geological areas, giving it an originality and a character which are reflected in its wines. The land is a combination of clay and chalk of the primary geological age which is particularly suitable for growing vines and making quality wines.
The long-standing reputation of Château de Saint Martin is the result of a family tradition established in the 18th century. It is able to meet the most demanding standards of restaurants, wine importers, delicatessens and connoisseurs all over the world. With one exception (the Comte of Rohan Chabot, the father of the present owner and a well-known figure in the world of wine), the domain has always been managed by women. Today the domain is managed by Madame de Barry, the daughter of the present owner, the Comtesse de Gasquet. Besides producing a range of fine wines of great character, the domain welcome its visitors to its historic and cultural heritage.

THE CRUS CLASSES
In its Official bulletin of July, 30th, 1955, the Ministry of Agriculture conferred by law the title of « CRU CLASSE » to 23 Domains and Châteaux of the appellation. This followed a rigorous expert assessment of geology, hydrology, yield etc… which allied to the best vinification processes today assure consistency and high quality. These “crus classés” represent the elite of the appellation.
